Frank Lampard labelled Coventry City's stunning victory over Newcastle United as a "complete performance".
Lampard thrilled with Coventry's 'complete performance' against Newcastle
Coventry City recorded a statement victory in the Premier League on Monday, thrashing Newcastle United 4-1 at home.
The Sky Blues climbed out of the relegation zone after a 4-1 win at the Coventry Building Society Arena, securing their first home win in the Premier League since promotion.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, while Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni also got on the scoresheet in what was a clinical performance.
Coventry have enjoyed back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since March and April 2001, while they netted 4+ goals in a top-flight game for the first time since May 2000 (versus Sheffield Wednesday, also 4-1).
While Lampard insisted his side must stay humble, he was still delighted with an impressive performance in front of their home fans.
"Very, very satisfying. It's so hard to win. We played like the team that we want to be here," Lampard told Sky Sports.
"There is so much spirit and energy in the group and we know we are going to have to suffer a lot this season. The work ethic of the boys and the belief... you get what you deserve, which was great finishes.
"We haven't quite had that rub of the green this season that would help us nick more points. It was a complete performance.
"We have to keep our feet on the ground. It's a great feeling for the players to feel that."
Courtesy of Cherif (19 years, 301 days) and Mfuni (18 years, 242 days), Coventry saw two teenagers score in the same Premier League game for the first time, with Mfuni the youngest-ever scorer for the club in a competition.
Cherif became the first Coventry player to both score a goal and win a penalty in a Premier League game since Lee Carsley against Everton in January 2001.
"It's very exciting because he's so young," Lampard said about Cherif, who made his first start in the competition.
"He's got a really good manner, a really good way about him, he wants to train, he wants to learn.
"He's quite quiet, but he showed a lot of personality and didn't stop running. There is a lot to come."
