Crystal Palace 2-2 Everton: Mateta dents visitors' European hopes
Everton's hopes of playing European football next season are fading fast, after Crystal Palace twice came from behind at Selhurst Park.
Everton missed the chance to move within two points of the Premier League's top seven after they were twice pegged back in their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
Conference League finalists Palace came from behind twice to rescue a point at Selhurst Park, with Jean-Philippe Mateta climbing off the bench to ensure a share of the spoils.
David Moyes' side hit the front after just six minutes, as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's corner ricocheted across the six-yard area for James Tarkowski to tuck away at the far post.
Maxence Lacroix and Dewsbury-Hall were denied at either end, before Palace equalised in the 34th minute, with Ismaila Sarr firing home after his initial effort deflected back to him.
Everton regained their lead within two minutes of the second half. Beto chased Tarkowski's long ball and outsmarted Lacroix, before sliding a neat effort through Dean Henderson's legs.
After James Garner's fierce free-kick was tipped over, Palace increased their pressure in search of an equaliser, which finally came in the 77th minute when Mateta lashed into the roof of the net.
Adam Wharton almost completed the turnaround in the 89th minute when his long-range drive crashed against the post.
Iliman Ndiaye fired a decent opportunity over at the other end, while Mateta was also narrowly off target. Everton are likely going to have to win both of their last two matches, and rely on favours from elsewhere, to stand a chance of European qualification.
Data Debrief: Twenty-goal Sarr matches Johnson
Despite their Conference League semi-final heroics in midweek – and an xG of 2.66 to their opponents' 1.55 on Sunday – Palace have now won just one of their last six Premier League matches directly after a European game (D3 L2).
Of the Eagles' five victories in their last 12 matches in all competitions, four have come in the Conference League.
On a brighter note, Sarr's 20th goal of the season in all competitions made him only the second Palace player to achieve the feat during a single campaign as a Premier League club, after Andy Johnson in 2004-05 (20).
Meanwhile, Everton have now failed to win any of their last five league games (D3 L2), their longest streak since a run of six between February and April 2025.
