Manchester City 3-0 Brentford: Doku dazzles again to keep title race alive
Jeremy Doku was again the driving force for Manchester City as they got back on track by beating Brentford 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City kept their Premier League title hopes alive as Jeremy Doku's inspired display helped them to a 3-0 win over Brentford.
Doku rescued a point for Man City in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Everton on Monday, albeit that result had seen Pep Guardiola's team hand Arsenal the initiative in the title race.
City now have to stay perfect and hope for Arsenal to slip up if they are to win the title, and there was a nervousness around the Etihad Stadium.
That transferred onto the pitch as City turned in a disjointed display in the first half, and Brentford seemed to be building momentum early in the second.
However, on the hour mark, Doku bent in a sumptuous opener, picking out the top-right corner to break the deadlock in sensational style.
Brentford had a penalty appeal dismissed at the other end, before Erling Haaland settled the nerves when he bundled home in the 75th minute.
Caoimhin Kelleher made an outstanding save to deny Phil Foden, but City added further gloss to the scoreline when Omar Marmoush finished coolly in stoppage time, putting the pressure back on Arsenal as they head to West Ham on Sunday.
Data Debrief: More Doku delight
Doku was stellar against Everton, netting a brace, and the Belgian maintained his levels this time out.
He became just the third player in a Premier League match this season to record 6+ chances created and complete 6+ dribbles, after Bukayo Saka v Fulham in October and Elliot Anderson v Brighton in November.
Doku's three goals this week have either put City ahead or drawn them level, and he has now scored in three successive appearances in all competitions for the first time in his time at the club. The winger has seven goal involvements in his last six games (five goals, two assists), as many as in his previous 24 (one goal, six assists).
Haaland, meanwhile, has scored in four consecutive Premier League games, while only in his debut campaign of 2022-23 (44) has he had a hand in more league goals for Manchester City than his 34 goal involvements this term (26 goals, eight assists).
City may have taken a while to get into their stride, but they were deserved victors, generating chances worth 2.98 expected goals compared to Brentford's 0.24, and showing the cutting edge that has so often led them to success under Guardiola.
