Bayern Munich 2-2 Manchester City: Wamser rescues draw in Women's Champions League opener

Khadija Shaw missed a penalty but Carlotta Wamser's late goal saw Manchester City rescue a 2-2 draw in their Women's Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.

Bayern, last season's semi-finalists, charged into a 2-0 lead inside the first 28 minutes at Uhlsport Park.

Giulia Gwinn was played in by Linda Dallmann and made no mistake with a crisp, powerful finish.

Bayern were then in cruise control when they capitalised on a defensive mix-up from Man City, with Pernille Harder's cross causing havoc, and Kerstin Casparij was only able to turn it into her own net.

Yet, on the cusp of half-time, Beth Mead dragged City back into the contest as Casparij's cross found its way through to her, and she duly tucked home.

City looked all set to draw level around the hour mark, after Aoba Fujino was brought down by Ena Mahmutovic in Bayern's box.

Shaw, though, showed unusual profligacy as she saw her attempt saved by Mahmutovic, who atoned for her mistake.

Yet City did get their equaliser in the 86th minute, with Wamser whipping a fine effort in at the near post after she met Laura Blindkilde Brown's tee-up.

Man City show powers of recovery

City have made a fantastic start to their Women's Super League title defence, winning all three of their matches so far, but they endured a miserable opening half-an-hour of their European campaign. 

This was their first meeting against Bayern, or indeed any German team, in this competition, although City should probably have expected their hosts to make a fast start.

After all, Bayern had won seven of their previous 11 Champions League matches against English teams, including both legs of last season's quarter-final against Manchester United (3-2 A, 2-1 H).

Harder is just one off scoring her 50th Women's Champions League goal. She is aiming to become only the third player to reach this milestone, after Ada Hegerberg (69) and Eugenie Le Sommer (50).

And though Harder did not score, she was a threat throughout, and she laid on two great chances late on for Edna Imade, who could have done better with her finishes.

As it was, Andree Jeglertz will at least be able to reflect on a spirited City comeback, and they rounded out with a fairly even stat sheet.

Bayern created chances worth 2.03 expected goals from 15 shots, while City had opportunities worth a combined 2.31 xG from just eight attempts. Room for improvement, but definitely a decent showing in attack.
