Bayern to be cautious with Olise ahead of trip to Atletico

  • Bayern Munich face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, but could be without a key player in Michael Olise.

Bayern Munich director Max Eberl insisted the club will not rush Michael Olise back from injury to avoid a potential long-term issue.

Olise was replaced late on during Bayern's Klassiker draw with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday with a knee injury.

The winger trained with strapping around his knee on Monday, and has travelled with the squad ahead of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, though his participation is in question.

Olise has scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 13 appearances for Bayern this season, while only Lamine Yamal (23) and Raphinha (20) have directly contributed to more goals across the top five European leagues.

Manuel Neuer is also an injury doubt for Tuesday's clash, and Eberl offered an update on both the goalkeeper and Olise.

"As for Michael Olise, we'll take another look at him on Tuesday; we're taking it day by day," Eberl said.

"It's good that he's travelling with us, because he's an outstanding player who's always a great asset. However, we’ll avoid the risk of it turning into a long-term injury.

"Manuel Neuer has been out for quite some time but has been training, so we'll see how it goes."

Bayern have drawn their last two games in this competition (3-3 v Viking, 2-2 v Arsenal), and have not drawn three in a row in the Champions League for almost 20 years, last doing so between October-December 2006 (three).

Despite winning just two of their eight meetings against Bayern in European competition, Atleti are unbeaten against them at home (W2 D1).

Harry Kane, who has scored in each of his last 10 appearances for Bayern in the Champions League, anticipates a tough challenge in the Spanish capital.

"They're a very strong side; they’re very good defensively," Kane said of Atleti.

"So, you might think only of their defence – but they're also good going forward. They enjoy playing football, especially in attack. And they've got some very dangerous players, [so] we won’t be underestimating them.

"We're expecting it to be a very physical game. That's one of their strengths. But we need to be careful at the back; we hope we can improve a few things."
