Conte: It's not a fluke Napoli were two goals down again
Despite drawing level from a two-goal deficit against Bologna, Napoli still lost 3-2 at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Monday.
Antonio Conte claimed it was no fluke that Napoli found themselves 2-0 down against Bologna in their Serie A defeat.
Napoli lost 3-2 at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with Jonathan Rowe scoring an acrobatic 91st-minute winner for the visitors.
Rowe's goal at 90:30 is the latest Bologna have scored against Napoli in Serie A since Rolando Bianchi's at 89:52 in January 2014.
Napoli looked to be on their way to a point when goals from Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Alisson Santos cancelled out earlier strikes from Federico Bernardeschi and Riccardo Orsolini, but they could not hold on in stoppage time.
They have now lost two of their last three Serie A matches at the Maradona, as many defeats as they had in their previous 35 home matches in the competition.
And after going two goals down in 34 minutes, Conte sees a pattern forming due to Napoli's poor pressing.
"When you press, you’ve got to do it properly, because if you only do it halfway then you just end up running around for nothing," Conte told DAZN Italia.
"We could've been more determined in the pressing, but it wasn’t the first time this season we were 2-0 down, so that means it’s not a fluke.
"Evidently, we need to be more determined in the initial approach, because it keeps happening.
"We managed to get it back on track, tried to win and pushed hard, but if you can’t win, then you should at least try not to lose. I don’t think we deserved to lose, but these things happen.
"There are two games to go, we’ve got to recharge the batteries, secure Champions League football in these two matches and try to do our best.
"I am not upset with the performance, I saw the lads wanted to get the job done tonight, but at times there’s a twist in the tale."
Napoli rank 13th in Serie A this season for high turnovers (201), while they have had 34 shots from such scenarios and scoring only once from those situations, which is the joint-lowest in the division.
The Champions League race in Serie A is now wide open, with just five points separating second-place Napoli and Como in sixth.
Conte's side travel to Pisa this weekend before closing out their season at home to Udinese on May 24.
