Can Marmoush now handle the plaudits, asks Guardiola
Omar Marmoush was the star of the show as his quickfire first-half hat-trick propelled Manchester City to a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.
Pep Guardiola quipped that now it is time to see how Omar Marmoush handles compliments after his star turn against Newcastle United.
Marmoush scored a 14-minute hat-trick in the first half of Saturday's 4-0 rout of the Magpies at the Etihad Stadium.
James McAtee rounded off the victory for City, who now have a huge week coming up, as they prepare to take on Real Madrid and Liverpool.
In terms of minutes between the first and third goals, Marmoush's hat-trick was the second-quickest by a City player in the Premier League.
Marmoush also became the second player whose first three Premier League goals for City came as a hat-trick, after Paulo Wanchope against Sunderland in August 2000.
After seeing one of the club's big-money January signings open his City account, Guardiola told BBC Sport: "We knew sooner or later he would score goals, he is a good finisher.
"Of course, he has to improve, but now we see how he handles the compliments."
City have now won 16 straight Premier League home matches against Newcastle.
Guardiola also picked out another of his new arrivals - midfielder Nico Gonzalez - for praise, with the former Porto man having been deployed in a similar role to the one Rodri has so often occupied for City.
"We were really good, good energy up front. Nico Gonzalez helped us a lot, I was really pleased because we needed him, it has been a tough three months," Guardiola said.
"He is our mini Rodri! He has a huge presence, his pace, and his time at Barcelona's academy, it is all about the ball and positioning. He has the desire to have success in the Premier League, he is here to prove himself."
Gonzalez had more touches (112) and played more passes (101) than any other player - 98 of those passes were accurate.
There was some cause for concern for City late on, when Erling Haaland went down holding his knee, though Guardiola was hopeful on the striker's fitness.
"I have not spoken to the doctor, but I was scared when he went down," said Guardiola. "Maybe it's not bad as it could be."
