Aston Villa 1-1 Fulham: McGinn penalty miss and Suzuki own goal prove costly for Emery's men

  • Although Nicolas Jackson continued his goalscoring form for Aston Villa, Unai Emery's side failed to win all three points against Fulham.

Aston Villa were made to pay for a missed penalty and an own goal as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Nicolas Jackson gave Unai Emery's side a first-half lead at Villa Park after John McGinn missed from 12 yards out, but Fulham's persistence paid off after the hour mark when Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki dropped the ball into his own net.

Alex Iwobi squandered a great chance after just five minutes, firing over from Gonzalo Garcia's cross, while Leon Goretzka saw a header land on the roof of the net at the other end.

Villa were awarded a penalty when another Goretzka header was blocked by the hand of Sander Berge, but McGinn's spot-kick came back off the crossbar in the 16th minute.

Fulham wasted another opportunity, this time Suzuki when denied Oscar Bobb from close range, and the Cottagers were made to pay in the 39th minute as Jackson curled into the bottom-right corner.

Leno was alert to keep Jackson out early in the second half, while neither Shea Charles nor Garcia could direct their attempts on target from a Fulham corner.

The chances continued to come at both ends, with Leno reacting well to Ian Maatsen's deflected volley before Garcia saw his effort deflected behind by Victor Lindelof.

The Cottagers finally equalised from the resulting corner in the 64th minute as Suzuki spilled Iwobi's cross over the line while completely uncontested, though Villa pushed hard for a winner.

The hosts created two opportunities for Pau Torres in the final 10 minutes, but the defender headed wide on both occasions as Villa had to settle for a point.

A tale of two halves for Suzuki

Suzuki played a vital role in Villa's half-time lead, with his save to keep out Bobb the pick of his four stops, but his own goal will grab most of the headlines following this result.

He is the first Villa goalkeeper to score an own goal in the Premier League since Emiliano Martinez v Liverpool in May 2024, with Suzuki also the very first Asian goalkeeper to do so in the competition.

Jackson, meanwhile, is the first Villa player to score in three successive home Premier League games since Morgan Rogers in April 2024, while no Premier League player can match his six goals across all competitions this month.

Fulham will argue they deserved a point, winning the expected goals (xG) battle 2.21 to 1.71, with the latter total also boosted by McGinn's penalty, and Alvaro Arbeloa's side will be glad to leave Villa Park with something.

The Cottagers have avoided defeat away to Villa in the Premier League for the first time since April 2014 under Felix Magath (2-1 win), having lost each of their last five visits to Villa Park in the top-flight prior to this.
