Simeone laments flat Atletico after title hopes fade with Las Palmas loss
Atletico Madrid's title hopes were all but ended after a late defeat to Las Palmas on Saturday, and Diego Simeone rued a flat performance.
Diego Simeone was left to rue Atletico Madrid's poor performance in Saturday's defeat to Las Palmas as their slim LaLiga title chances were dealt a major blow.
Atletico suffered a 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Las Palmas, with Javi Munoz scoring a stoppage-time winner to deal Simeone's side a shock.
It leaves them third in LaLiga on 63 points, 10 behind leaders Barcelona, who earned a last-gasp win over Celta Vigo on Saturday, and three adrift of second-placed Real Madrid, who host Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Atletico are now given just a 0.2% chance of winning LaLiga by the Opta supercomputer with five games remaining.
And Simeone seemed resigned to losing the last title Atletico were competing for this season, admitting the match "did not go as they had imagined".
"If we had any chance of winning the league, we had to get perfect numbers. [On Saturday], we didn't," the Argentine told reporters.
"The first half was fairly solid, but we couldn't take the lead. The second half started flat, and we weren't able to create what we had imagined."
Atleti were punished for their failure to create by a goal timed at 92 minutes and 36 seconds, the third latest they have conceded for a 1-0 defeat in LaLiga in the 21st century.
The second-latest was timed at 94:39 in September 2005, by Joan Capdevila for Deportivo de La Coruna, and the latest was timed at 94:44 in March 2012, by Apono with Real Zaragoza.
Atletico accumulated just 0.8 expected goals (xG) from their seven attempts, managing two shots on target, which both came in the first half.
Simeone denied any lack of attitude by his players, but admitted that their tactical execution and individual performance fell short.
"It wasn't a matter of attitude, we just played badly," he said. "There was no fluidity, no chance to link up play.
"We set the game up a certain way and made changes to find solutions, but it didn't work."
The coach added that, despite having virtually lost the title, he will continue to approach each game with the same determination, while aiming to improve the team's defensive play.
"We always prepare with the same enthusiasm, and we will continue to take care of it as we have been doing for the past 14 years," Simeone said.
"We have struggled more in this last stretch than we did at the beginning of the season. Defence is a very important part of our game, and we need people who understand what we need."
