Florian Wirtz acknowledged his performance in Friday's 4-3 friendly win over Switzerland was his best for Germany yet, having had a hand in all four of their goals.

Wirtz scored twice and provided two assists as Julian Nagelsmann's team won a topsy-turvy encounter in Basel, having twice fallen behind in the first half.

Having also recorded two assists in a 6-0 rout of Slovakia in November, Wirtz has as many goal involvements in his last two games for Germany (six) as he has managed in 27 Premier League matches for Liverpool since his big-money switch from Bayer Leverkusen.

Since making his international debut in September 2021, Wirtz has recorded 21 goal involvements for Germany (10 goals, 11 assists), with only Kai Havertz (15 goals, six assists) able to match him in that time. 

Wirtz did acknowledge after full-time, though, that his first goal – a looping effort that sailed over Gregor Kobel from near the left corner of the box – was unintentional.

Asked if he had just produced his best display for his country, Wirtz said: "Probably, yes. With this many goal involvements, yes. 

"For the first goal, I'd be lying if I said I meant for it to go exactly there, but I'll take it. On the second goal, you can see that's exactly where I wanted the ball to go."

Germany now face Ghana in another friendly on Monday, with Nagelsmann likely to shuffle his pack as he continues to build towards the World Cup.

"Of course, we all want to reach the final and bring the World Cup home. We know it will be tough, but we have a great squad and we don't need to hide," Wirtz added.

"We have a very good team and very good defenders. It's been quite some time since we played together. The goals we conceded were avoidable. We'll work on improving that." 

Nagelsmann was also irked by some weak defending from Germany, though he reiterated that they deserved to win after racking up 22 shots and 2.63 expected goals, compared to Switzerland's seven attempts and 0.59 xG.

"We created many big chances against a team that usually concede very little. I think we could have scored many more goals," Nagelsmann told reporters.

"Switzerland certainly made the most of their few chances. Flo scored a couple of exceptional goals, that has to be said. 

"But defensively, things weren't always good today. We were too passive at times. That has to be pointed out quite clearly. Overall, though, we deserved to win."
