AC Milan moved back up to second in Serie A after Adrien Rabiot's goal proved decisive in a 1-0 away win over Hellas Verona.

Massimiliano Allegri's side had lost their last two league games, but responded well with a narrow victory that lifted them above Napoli.

The Rossoneri are still a massive 12 points behind leaders Inter with five games remaining, with the Scudetto race effectively over barring a minor miracle.

A quiet first half was brought to life four minutes before the break when Rafael Leao capitalised on Verona's lapse in possession before teeing up Rabiot to finish coolly from inside the area.

Verona had a chance to respond soon after, though Mike Maignan read Rafik Belghali's intentions and pushed away his curling finish after the striker went clean through on goal.

Substitute Ioan Vermesan kept Maignan alert with a long-range drive in the second half, before whipping narrowly wide after beating the Milan goalkeeper from a similar distance.

A huge Matteo Gabbia block stopped Gift Orban from levelling with six minutes remaining as Milan held on for a crucial three points.

In fact, Milan's eight 1-0 victories are more than any other side this campaign across those European divisions, and this one came thanks to Rabiot.

The French midfielder has scored six times this season in Serie A, passing the five-goal mark in Europe's top five leagues for just the third time in his career (eight with Juventus in 2022-23 and nine with Marseille in 2024-25).

And it was far from a classic. Milan accumulated just 0.85 expected goals (xG) to Verona's 0.5 in a hard-fought clash.
