Postecoglou: Tottenham working hard to 'turn things around' after recent slump
Ange Postecoglou is under pressure as Tottenham slipped further down the Premier League, but he believes they can have success elsewhere.
Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham are working hard to turn things around and is convinced they can still have a successful season despite their poor recent run.
Spurs have lost six of their last 10 matches in all competitions (W3 D1), during which time they have dropped to 15th in the Premier League.
However, during that run, they also put themselves on the brink of securing automatic qualification to the Europa League round of 16 and beat Liverpool to take a 1-0 advantage in their two-legged EFL Cup semi-final.
The pressure mounted further on Postecoglou last time out though, as Spurs gave up a first-half lead to lose 2-1 to struggling Leicester City in the Premier League, extending their winless run in the Premier League to seven matches – no side in the competitions has picked up fewer points since December 22 than them (one).
Despite their struggles, Postecoglou remained adamant that Spurs could still do something special before the end of the campaign.
"My message would be to all Spurs fans because I represent all Spurs fans, not just the angry ones that you are referring to," Postecoglou said when asked if he had a message for the 'angry' Tottenham fans.
"We are working hard to turn this around. We know the situation, and we are notwithstanding the fact that the possibilities and opportunities in the second half of the season are very much in our hands to capitalise on and make it a successful season."
In the Europa League, Spurs sit sixth in the league table on 14 points, knowing a win would secure them an automatic place in the knockout stages.
Asked if he was feeling the pressure ahead of their final league-phase match against Elfsborg, Postecoglou added: "Me personally? No different to any other game. It's a game we want to win, and we'll go into it with the same intent.
"It's a competition we've done really well in; we're in a great position, and we want to solidify that position and finish in the top eight.
"It's in our hands [on Thursday] night. A win makes it certain; a draw will probably be good enough as well.
"Finishing in the top eight for us is hugely important because it gives us a good foothold in the tournament but also gives us a couple of weeks when we don't have midweek games and, at this point, is really important."
Postecoglou also confirmed that Micky van de Ven could feature for Spurs on Thursday after recovering from injury, though they will still be without James Maddison, who missed the game against his former side Leicester.
"Micky [van de Ven] is good to go so we will try and get him some minutes tomorrow. He has a good week / 10 days of training, and he's in good condition so he's fine," Postecoglou said.
"James Maddison has got a calf strain so he will be out for 2-3 weeks. Pape Sarr is OK, he's got a niggle, but he's OK and available. Yves Bissouma is available. I think that is it for tomorrow night at this stage."
