Gasperini celebrates Atalanta's 'incredible' season despite falling short of Scudetto challenge
Atalanta beat AC Milan on Sunday to further cement themselves in the Champions League places with just five Serie A games remaining.
Gian Piero Gasperini sees no reason to be disappointed with Atalanta's "incredible" campaign.
Last season's Europa League winners looked well set to challenge for the Serie A title earlier in the season, but have ultimately fallen away in recent weeks, with a four-game winless run proving costly.
However, Sunday's 1-0 win over AC Milan ensured Atalanta will head into their final five games of the campaign in third place, in prime position to secure Champions League qualification.
Atalanta were put under pressure by Bologna's 1-0 win over leaders Inter earlier in the day, but Ederson's strike proved decisive against Milan.
And Gasperini has no regrets over Atalanta's campaign.
"For me it's an incredible season, tonight's victory gives us the chance to reach the Champions League again, which is an extraordinary goal, fundamental for Bergamo," Gasperini told DAZN.
"Bologna's victory could have been dangerous, having won at San Siro gives us an incredible turning point.
"Let's not joke, how can you have regrets with 64 points.
"It's true, we are seven points off the top two and this is down to the head-to-head games lost against the leaders.
"But from a technical point of view to think that Atalanta could play for the Scudetto is a bit exaggerated. Just look at the big teams that are behind us."
Atalanta have taken 36 points on the road this season, more than any other team in Serie A.
Sunday's victory marks just the third occasion that Atalanta have done the league double over Milan, after 2007-08 and 1940-41.
They next face relegation-threatened Lecce.
