Dortmund to fine Adeyemi for reaction to being substituted
Borussia Dortmund cruised to a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach before the winter break, but Karim Adeyemi's conduct made headlines.
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl says the club will fine Karim Adeyemi for his furious reaction to being substituted during Friday's 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Dortmund climbed to second in the Bundesliga table, at least temporarily, as goals in either half from Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier secured a deserved victory.
Beier was introduced from the bench on the hour mark in place of Adeyemi, who had missed a good chance with an expected goals value of 0.23 xG with BVB 1-0 up.
Adeyemi's 30 touches, 11 attempted passes and eight successful passes were all the fewest by any Dortmund starter, while he only won one of the 14 duels he contested.
And the 23-year-old – who has been linked with an exit in recent weeks – reacted angrily to his withdrawal, attempting to walk straight down the tunnel before being confronted by Kehl.
Speaking to Sky Sports DE after the game, Kehl said: "It [the substitution] was totally justified. Karim didn't play a good game.
"The coach doesn't want to see that – nobody wants to see it. That's not appropriate and Karim knows that. That's why he'll get a fine for it."
Head coach Niko Kovac, meanwhile, was pleased to see his team boost their top-four hopes with a routine victory, having only allowed Gladbach one shot on target and won the xG battle by 1.43 to 0.28.
"I'm very happy that we won," Kovac said in his own interview with Sky Sports DE. "At the end of the day, it was deserved.
"We only allowed Gladbach one dangerous chance and missed one or two really good chances ourselves.
"We started well but then didn't do so well in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Gladbach came back a bit then.
"In the second half, it was an open game. We have to continue to work hard, to stay focused, and work together with the ball, but also against the ball.
"Then this team definitely has what it takes to finish in the top four."
