FC Dallas v Real Salt Lake: Mastroeni urges visitors to build on 'complete performance' against Portland
In a battle between sixth and seventh in the Western Conference, FC Dallas welcome Real Salt Lake to Toyota Stadium this weekend.
Pablo Mastroeni urged his Real Salt Lake team to build on their win over the Portland Timbers, a display he described as the side's "most complete performance" of the year.
RSL snapped a two-game losing run in the MLS with a comfortable 2-0 victory at America First Field, with Zavier Gozo and Diego Luna scoring in the first half.
It was a display that perhaps merited more for RSL, given they registered an expected goals (xG) total of 3.8 from their 25 shots to Portland's 1.2 from their 11 attempts.
That win also marked RSL's sixth of the season, and their fifth on home soil. Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral logged his first clean sheet of the 2026 campaign, which was their first shutout since a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in October 2025.
RSL are up to sixth in the Western Conference, one place above this weekend's opponents, FC Dallas, and Mastroeni wants his team to keep up that level of performance.
"Really proud of this group," said Mastroeni.
"The balance lent itself to probably our most complete performance of the year and another performance that we have to continue to build upon."
Dallas, meanwhile, ended a four-game winless run in the MLS with a 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls, with Petar Musa and Sam Sarver scoring in the second half.
It was also the Toros' first win away to NYRB since May 2006, and it was a result that moved them up to seventh in the West after 11 games of their season.
They were deserving of their win, having registered an xG total of 1.6 from their 12 shots, compared to NYRB's 0.9 from their nine attempts in the contest.
"I'm super proud of the guys. They fought from the first minute to the 95th with heart and soul and found moments of quality to win the game," Quill said.
"To do that on the road in this stadium against a side with Red Bull's quality says a lot about the effort our guys put in."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Dallas – Petar Musa
Musa scored his 10th goal of the season in Dallas' win last time out, tied with Chicago Fire's Hugo Cuypers for most in MLS in 2026.
In addition, he is the first Dallas player to score 10 goals within his first 10 appearances of a season.
RSL – Zavier Gozo
Gozo scored the first of RSL's two goals in their win over Portland on Saturday, his seventh regular-season goal to go along with six assists.
The 19-year-old's 13 goal contributions since the start of last season are the most by any teenager in MLS over that time.
MATCH PREDICTION: DALLAS WIN
Dallas have lost only two of 26 all-time home matches against RSL in all competitions (W16 D8), but have managed just one win in their last eight home matches against this weekend's opponents (D6 L1) dating back to the start of the 2018 season.
However, Dallas held NYRB without a shot on target in their win last time out, the first time they did not allow a shot on target in two years, last doing so against the Houston Dynamo in April 2024. Only five teams have faced fewer shots on target than Dallas (42) this season.
RSL, meanwhile, have won only one of their last 10 away matches in all competitions (D2 L7) dating back to the end of last season. Over the last two years (since May 2024), they have won just six of 37 away matches in all competitions (D13 L18).
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Dallas – 43.1%
Draw – 24.2%
RSL – 32.7%
