Kompany shrugs off questions over Neuer's Bayern Munich future
Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer is out of contract at the end of 2025-26, but Vincent Kompany is not considering the goalkeeper's future.
Bayern Munich are in no rush to make a decision on Manuel Neuer's future at the club, Vincent Kompany has explained.
Neuer, who joined Bayern from Schalke in 2011, turns 40 next month, and is out of contact at the end of the season.
Reports suggest a contract offer has been tabled to Neuer, but no call has yet been made by the goalkeeper.
Kompany, however, says there is no urgency for the situation to be resolved.
"In these cases, and it's the same for every player, especially when you've had a career like Manu has, that you don't talk about next season," Kompany said ahead of Saturday's Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen.
"You talk and enjoy what you've got. At the moment, I have the best goalkeeper in Germany.
"We're still in three competitions and don't want to waste too much energy talking about next season. For me, it's about enjoying what Manu's doing and that he's part of our team."
Sporting director Christoph Freund added: "Manu is a really important part of our team and we're happy he's here.
"Also the setup with our goalkeepers is really special, with Jonas Urbig and Sven Ulreich. There's a special energy there. We're not stressed. Manu has the best feeling for his body."
Bayern saw their lead at the top of the Bundesliga cut to as few as three points last weekend, but they moved back to six ahead by thrashing Hoffenheim 5-1.
Harry Kane scored twice and Luis Diaz netted a hat-trick.
Borussia Dortmund have the chance to put the pressure back on Bayern by beating Mainz on Friday, but Kompany is not concerning himself with the form of rival teams.
"I'm pretty cold when it comes to that, I'm in a tunnel," he said.
"It doesn't matter what happens in other fixtures. We assume the opposition will win every game, so we need to win every game too. I'm 100% in that tunnel and hope the team is as well."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Werder Bremen - Romano Schmid
Schmid has created 45 chances from open play in the Bundesliga this season, a tally only bettered by Bayern's Michael Olise (48).
With Olise due to miss this game after receiving a suspension, Scmid will be looking to nudge himself ahead.
Bayern Munich - Harry Kane
Kane has scored 24 goals after 21 Bundesliga matchdays (as he also did in 2023-24), with only Robert Lewandowski achieving more at this stage in history in his record 2020-21 season (25 goals; 41 at the end of the season).
The England captain has more direct goal involvements in the Bundesliga only against Hoffenheim (11) than against Werder (nine – six goals, three assists).
Kane's next goal in the Bundesliga will be his 300th in Europe's top five leagues.
MATCH PREDICTION: BAYERN MUNICH WIN
Bayern have scored in each of their last 33 Bundesliga games and have 79 goals after 21 matches, a new Bundesliga record.
Werder have failed to score nine times in the Bundesliga this season – the joint-highest in the league with Borussia Monchengladbach.
Only in 2017-18 did Werder fail to score more often in their first 21 Bundesliga games of a season (ten times).
Bayern have 54 points after 21 Bundesliga games, just like last season. They only had more points in 2013-14 (59) and 2015-16 (56) at this stage.
Across two seasons, Bayern are unbeaten in their last 19 away Bundesliga matches (W14 D5) – they only had longer away unbeaten runs in the Bundesliga between 1985 and 1987 (26 games) and from 2012 to 2014 (33).
Werder, who are 16th, are winless in their last 11 Bundesliga matches (D4 L7) – their longest current run in the league and their longest since being promoted back to the top-flight in 2022.
This will be the 118th Bundesliga encounter between these teams – no other fixture has been played as often in the history of the Bundesliga.
Bayern have lost just one of their last 36 competitive matches against Werder (W31 D4) and have won all of their last 16 away games against them – this is the longest away winning streak by a club against a single opponent in German professional football.
